5 easy ways to reduce stress and boredom 👇

1. Place a cardboard box in the middle of the room
   Why? Cats are instinctively drawn to confined spaces because they provide a sense of security and a tactical vantage point for hunting. Research into feline stress levels shows that providing hiding enrichment significantly reduces cortisol levels in cats by allowing them to feel concealed from potential predators whilst still being able to monitor the environment
2. Scatter a portion of dry food across a flat hard surface instead of using a bowl
   Why? This forces your cat to use its nose and paws to locate and retrieve individual pieces of food. Biologists refer to this as contrafreeloading where animals actually prefer to work for their food rather than eating from a freely available source because it fulfills their innate foraging circuit 🧠
3. Open a window (with a secure screen if you have an indoor cat) to let the outside scents and sounds in
   Why? Cats have an amazingly sophisticated olfactory system including something called a vomeronasal organ which is used to analyse pheromones.  By introducing new outdoor scents you’re providing  enrichment that stimulates the brain and mimics the sensory complexity of a natural outdoor territory 🌺 
4. Freeze a small amount of tasty liquid (e.g tuna water) into cubes and place one on a plate. As the ice melts your cat will be drawn to the changing texture and the cold temperature 🧊
   Why? This engages your cat’s predatory investigative behaviour through a process called ‘novel object stimulation’. This encourages cognitive flexibility as they try to work out how to interact with a moving melting item
5. Move a piece of furniture like a chair or a side table to a different part of the room. This takes about ten seconds of physical effort 🪑
   Why? Because cats are highly territorial and map their environment with precision. Changing the physical layout of their space creates forces them to re-explore & re-scent the area. Environmental complexity can prevent the cognitive dulling that can occur when an environment remains static for too long
